The Successful Journey of the Succcess Academy Head Eva Moskowitz

Eva is the initiator and Principal Member of the Success Charter Network. The network contains four charter schools in Harlem, New York. In the year 2006, she came up with Harlem Success Academy which was regarded by NY City Schools’ Chancellor, Joel Klein, as one of the nation’s top most charter schools. Michael Bloomberg, who is the mayor, has also cited it for its incredible performance. Come the year 2008, she went ahead to launch three more charter schools and has also stated that she intends to launch at least 40 more charter schools over the next ten years.

Before this, Eva Moskowitz used to serve as a New York City council member as well as the council’s education committee chair. She is still a force to be reckoned with as an educational advocate despite having gone back to her teaching ways so that she can implement her vastly acquired knowledge when she was out visiting numerous of New York City’s 1,300 charter and public schools. Eva Moskowitz believes that having charter schools within the same building as non-charter schools allows the parents to compare with ease how well or poorly their children perform in one or the other. She also sees the inadequacies of the public elementary curriculum, and this is because it is not challenging enough for the students.

Earlier in her career, Eva Moskowitz visited the Campus of Virginia as a communications and mass culture professor to teach Women’s Past from the year 1989 to 1990. In 1992 till 1993, she was an assistant professor of history at the Vanderbilt University. After this, she moved on to the City University of New York, also known as College of Staten Island, from the year 1994 to 1995 also as an assistant professor of history. From 1996 to 1999, Eva was the head of the department session at Columbia University during the American Studies.
