Apology from Papa John’s CEO

With all the bad press in the news about Papa John’s lately, President and CEO Steve Ritchie has spoken up for the company and apologized for the inappropriate words of the company’s former CEO and founder. In recent months, the company has taken a hit from words spoken by its former CEO who made a racial slur on a conference call and even placed blame on the NFL for Papa John’s declining sales. Steve Ritchie has taken the time to write a letter of apology and explain his and the company’s position. He states in his letter that, “Racism and insensitive language — no matter the context — will not be tolerated at any level of our company. Period.”

Steve Ritchie explains that Papa John’s isn’t a person, it’s a pizza company that has 120,000 corporate and franchise team members from around the world and these are our community members. He doesn’t just stand on words alone, but he is putting action behind his voice. Papa John’s is bringing in outsides experts to audit the company and its culture. They will be sending their senior management on the road to meet with their employees and gain their feedback to help create a better work environment. This letter comes on the trails of a letter that was previously posted on the Papa John’s website. The first letter was an apology but failed to show any compassion. This new letter was updated to give a direct apology and show empathy. Whether Steve Ritchie Papa John’s realized this on his own, or this was pointed out to him, it is an important step towards redeeming Papa John’s to its customers.
